Like most of you, I struggle to get my workouts in on a regular basis.  There are so many variables that go into getting to the gym.  I’m sure my obstacles are no different from yours.  Those are the obvious ones, but I recently found a not so obvious deterrent.  Allow me to explain.

My gym memberships have changed throughout the years.  I remember my first membership at a small local gym.  At the time it seemed as if I was the only girl.  Every guy in there was trying to be Mr. Olympia or something of the sort.  As a female, if you were aspiring for a great physique, Rachel McLish was your girl.  I did feel at home though, it was kind of crazy.

Fast forward to the early 90′s when it was the norm to pay $70.00 for a monthly membership.  This was the era of the Gold’s and World Gym’s.  You got your gym equipment and a few classes, mainly spinning, yoga and aerobics….fun.  Those were the days for me.  The best gym days of all.  In my 20′s with 2 kids in school.  My routine consisted of a 4:45am wake-up, off to the gym for cardio and a workout, back by 7:00.  Just in time to wake everyone else in the house up for their day.  That was the life.  I never missed a day, 5 days a week with weekends off.  ahhh.  It was here that I met my first trainer and lifelong friend, Jared.

Give or take 10 years later, hahahha, crazy to say that, we’re introduced the Planet Fitness franchise.  Not so bad at first.  Hell, $20 a month for a no frills membership and you can always bring a friend for free.  Opt to go friendless and it’s only $10.  Then the reality sets in.  With the decrease in price comes a changing clientele.  You know, the kids throwing weights around, wearing equipment, obnoxious colors.  All of the sudden, my haven is not so inviting.  That was the beginning of the end of my love affair with the gym.  I spent countless years searching to regain the passion and commitment I once had.

It wasn’t until a few years ago that I happened upon a smaller local gym, Fitness Edge.  This was the place I had been looking for.  A decent size, a good class schedule and specialized classes at an additional charge.  It was $26.00 a month.  Very doable.  Back to the early morning routine, it lasted for about a year.  And then; they became a franchise.  More clubs, more members, more corporate.  Not the place I fell in love with.  One bonus, with more clubs I was able to switch to a location closer to home and that is where I met Igor.  I really don’t like that location, the lights are blindingly bright and it has a very clinical feel to it.  The hours are limited as well.  Weekdays 5am -9pm, Saturday 7-6, Sunday 7-5.  You all know I workout, but definitely not as much as I’d like to.

You know that old adage “what’s old is new again”?  Well here we are and my friend Jared has opened a new gym called Anytime Fitness.  Of course I join to support my friend, but I’m unsure of how often I’ll use the gym.  Turns out, not too often at first.

Enter the month of January, chaos at any gym.  My 6:00am sessions at the Edge with Igor feel more like they’re happening at 5:00pm.  It’s so crowded and noisy.  Blah.  It was this scenario that prompted me to make more use of Anytime Fitness.  So now I must thank all the resolutioners (is that a word?).  What I’ve found is a boutique gym meant to keep you motivated and that it has.

Cardio is my nemesis, it always has been and always will be.  Unless of course it’s rollerblading on the beach boardwalk.  The other day on the treadmill I was thinking, I’ve been doing this for 20 years.  How can anyone do the same thing for 20 years and be expected to still have an interest in it?

Well Anytime Fitness has my cure.  With the exception of the Precor, all of their cardio machines have some kind of interactive trail.  You may have seen my Instagram pics on the bike.  The Espresso Bike offers a myriad of trails, distances and difficulty levels.  There are other riders, a ghost rider and a pacer.  It’s like being in a video game.  The bike is super comfortable and the handle bars move with you to navigate the trails.  There are also gears on the handles to adjust to the terrain.  The club offers a monthly challenge on these bikes where you compete not only with members in your local club, but Anytime Fitness members throughout the country.  You can post your rides to Facebook and Twitter and manage your account online.

The Life Fitness elliptical also offers hiking trails in some of the most popular canyons and forests in the US.  These trails are realistic.  I think the hikes were filmed by drone, very cool.  You set your base pace and the machine adjusts according to the terrain.  They also have online tracking.

Needless to say, I have actually been enjoying cardio as of late.  I have also been going to the gym more regularly.  For the first time in my year of training with Igor, I’m actually on week 3 of a consistent workout as prescribed.  Eureka!  That’s it, that’s the missing link!  It makes me giggle every time I say it, it’s the “Anytime” of Anytime Fitness!  With my crazy work schedule, I’m no longer bound by time.  If I can’t get to the gym before work, I know that I can take a quick nap after and still go to the gym.  It’s been so liberating.  My enthusiasm is back, my routine is back and most importantly, Mark is back at the gym.  All positives in my book.

Let me tell you a little more about Anytime Fitness.  First, let’s get the pricing out of the way.  Let’s just say, you get what you pay for.  The membership pricing is dependent upon which tier of membership you choose.  But let’s compare apples to apples.  There are so many benefits to this gym, the cost is not only justifiable, it’s necessary.

For starters, how about being able to use the awesome trampoline and battle ropes without being in a “trainer only cage?”  Not only does the facility have all the latest and greatest in gym equipment, it also offers an interactive classroom.  At a kiosk outside the room, you can choose the class you want to take and when.  Haha, another Anytime feature.  A projector displays the selected class on the entire front wall of the room.  The other night around 10pm I saw a girl taking a spin class, how cool is that?  You can take the class alone, with others or just jump into an existing one.  You can virtually take any type of class you want, pun intended.

There are trainers available, should you want a more personalized routine.  Actually, if you take in the gym as a whole, it’s the ideal setup for personal training.  No fluff, just everything you need for an amazing workout.  I also found out last night that the trainers have the ability to give you programs to follow on the cardio machines that are designed specifically for you.  This not only takes the guesswork out of your cardio session, but also affords your trainer the extra “hands on” attention to make sure you’re getting the most out of your workouts.

There is tanning and drumroll please…..a HydroMassage bed!  I try to use it every time after I workout.  10 minutes in there and you’re golden, especially after a back workout.

The gym is manned weekdays 10-7 and Saturdays till 1.  You gain entry by a key fob.  If it’s an odd time of night and you’re feeling a little uneasy, there are necklaces you can wear to activate a police response with the touch of a button.

After your first month, your key fob will get you into any other Anytime Fitness in the country.  I bet most of you didn’t know that other gyms charge for that luxury.

If you’re looking for personalized service, a family owned business and like minded people, this is the gym for you.  Trust me, it’ll become your home away from home.  You’ll see familiar faces and gain new friends.  Isn’t that the way it should be?  You’re greeted by name and other patrons actually smile and say hello.  Welcome back good old days.  I’m happy to bring you this fab find.  Try Anytime Fitness, you won’t regret it.  Actually, tell Jared aka Rabbit that The Fit Girls sent you :)
